The Bentley S" was introduced in1955 and remained in production until 1959. The S was derived from the completely redesigned Rolls-Royce standard production model, the Silver Cloud. The model would be the last standard production R-R/Bentley with an independent chassis. The S was announced at the end of April 1955. The new standard steel saloon would replaced the R Type, which had been in production, with modifications, since 1946. The S was a more generously sized five- or six-seater saloon with the body manufactured in pressed steel with stressed skin construction. Doors, bonnet and boot lid were of aluminium construction. The main differences, from the R type were, three inches longer wheelbase, a lower roof line without reducing headroom and with an enlarged boot, softer suspension with adjustable rear dampers, lighter steering, improved braking, larger engine capacity of 4887cc, (the same as used in the Bentley Continental) and a four-speed automatic gearbox, with ability to select individual ratios if desired. The standard car had a 123 inch wheelbase and, from 1957, a 127 inch LWB. This rare example of the LWB Bentley S is one of just 23 steel bodied examples built. A total of 35 chassis were laid down but 12 were assigned to various coach building companies. Compare this to the 3072 standard examples built and you realise how rare these cars are. There are various estimates concerning the survival rate of the LWB cars, with some saying that just 4 are still in running order. However, ALB9 has been in America for many years and does not appear to have been included in any surveys of the model. Finished in Sage green with light tan leather to the front and beige "West of England" cloth to the rear, the motorcar is equipped with privacy glass division, rear writing/picnic tables, independent controls for various functions and the very desirable option of Power Steering. Now due to arrived around mid December, because of Covid 19 delays, this very rare motorcar is offered complete with Factory build records, a mint copy of an owners manual and a mint example of an original Bentley S Sales Brochure.
